Welch Allyn® RetinaVue® 700 Imager

For decades, the standard of care has been to ask patients to go to where their healthcare is delivered (i.e., the eye specialist, in this case).
Given that diabetic retinopathy is still the leading cause of blindness for working age adults,2 the current care delivery model is clearly inadequate.
A paradigm shift is necessary in order to increase patient access to annual retinal examinations and to decrease the number of people suffering from vision loss and blindness as a result of undiagnosed diabetic retinopathy.
Increasing access to potentially vision-saving retinal exams for patients in primary healthcare settings can help eradicate diabetic retinopathy as a leading cause of vision loss and blindness.
The Problem
- Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of vision loss and blindness among adults between 20 and 74 years of age.
- With early detection, 95% of vision loss can be prevented, but patient compliance with annual retinal exams is low.
- Change is required to eradicate a leading cause of blindness. Evaluating retinal health in primary healthcare settings is highly effective – achieving over 90% patient compliance with diabetic retinal eye exams in a single year.
The Solution
- Increasing access to diabetic retinal exams in primary healthcare settings means more patients who are not receiving an annual exam can be checked and referred to specialists for timely, potentially vision-saving treatment.
Welch Allyn® RetinaVue® Care Delivery Model
- In 2015, Welch Allyn introduced a turnkey care delivery model designed to embed simple and affordable diabetic retinal exam capability in primary healthcare settings.
- Teleretinal programs such as the RetinaVue® care delivery model help primary healthcare providers improve patient outcomes while lowering population healthcare costs. It consists of three core components:
- Simple and affordable non-mydriatic retinal cameras to capture images
- HIPAA-compliant, SOC-2 Type-II certified RetinaVue Network software to securely transmit images and manage data
- Nationwide professional medical services by ophthalmologists at RetinaVue, P.C., or your preferred specialist, who interpret images and document diagnoses–including fundus images, ICD 10 codes and a recommended referral/care plan
