Twisted Ridge
Nestled on the edge of an 11 acre property overlooking the majestic Catskill mountains, Twisted Ridge is a newly completed residence designed by The Up Studio.
The project includes both a family home and guest house characterized by a uniquely-shaped twisted roof and an orientation towards view of the surrounding countryside.
“We took the traditional A-frame and twisted it,” explains Partner and Architect John Patrick Winberry. “Not only does this create a beautiful undulation in the design that references the nearby mountains, it also encourages snow build-up to naturally fall after winter storms.” In addition, the twisted roof design offers an ample amount of surface area for the solar panels, optimizing energy capture.
The architects chose to separate the guest wing from the primary structure, shifting it away from the main home. This design choice provides privacy for both units while forming an edge condition that establishes a central courtyard space that connects the homeowners with their guests and encourages coming together. The courtyard amenities, which include an in-ground pool, hot tub, and perfectly centered fire pit, are encircled by blended manicured landscaping and wild, native ground cover that gradually commingles with the surrounding woods.
In the main house, all the gathering spaces on the first floor and the bedrooms on the second floor are oriented towards the vast Hudson Valley views. “The main house, guest house, and courtyard are all in service of one thing: capturing the amazing mountain view,” says Winberry. “The kitchen, dining room, and living room of the main volume are all fully glazed to allow that mountain energy to come into the family’s daily life.”
