The Greenwich by Rafael Viñoly Studio
Global interiors studio MAWD | March and White Design recently unveiled the design and amenity programming behind New York’s most anticipated residential tower, The Greenwich by Rafael Viñoly.
One of the last masterpieces by the world-renowned architect, the residential tower soars 88 stories into the sky, boasting unprecedented views of New York Harbor and lower Manhattan.
MAWD worked closely with Rafael Viñoly Architects to seamlessly integrate Viñoly’s architectural work with the residence’s interior programming. For the project, MAWD was responsible for all residence, amenity, and interior design concepts, drawing inspiration from the tower’s light curvature. In collaboration with the architect, MAWD created three custom-designed palettes for the tower’s residences: Aqua, Terra, and Stratus, which draw on the building’s surrounding elements.
Lobby: The tower’s entrance is marked by an expansive triple-height lobby, soaring over 26 feet, and adorned with a custom chandelier. Richly decadent, the lobby’s interior features three distinct types of marble, a fireplace that creates an ambience of warmth upon arrival, and a soaring library featuring custom millwork and an open book display.
The Lobby’s front desk references the surrounding water in New York Harbor, with an electric blue hue. Behind the front desk, a large ‘X’ can be visible within the Noir Saint Laurent marble, which provides a nautical nod to MAWD’s background designing the interiors of superyachts. Accentuating the lobby’s verticality, bronze elevator banks reach up towards the ceiling, punctuated by Arabescato Carrara marble-clad walls.
Architectural Collaboration: The invitation from Rafael Viñoly appointing MAWD to lead the interiors program at The Greenwich prompted MAWD Co-Founder Elliot March to move from London to New York, and shortly thereafter, open MAWD’s New York Headquarters.
MAWD took a sophisticated approach to the interiors, working closely with the architectural studio, and curating distinctive materials to showcase the tower’s height and elegance. As such, the architecturally inspired interiors program worked to amplify space, natural light, and showcase the building’s exterior. The two firms collaborated closely to design the building from the inside-out, ensuring the most intelligent use of space, which embraces light and air on every floor, highlight’s the tower’s glass façade and soft rounded corners, and embraces expansive panoramic views.
Amenity Program: MAWD designed The Greenwich by Rafael Viñoly Studio to support resident’s social, physical, wellness, and professional ambitions. A true New York residence, the tower is designed for a global audience.
Throughout the project, MAWD utilized distinctive materials to showcase the lightness and scale of the tower. The uppermost three floors have been reserved for an extensive collection of amenities, crafted as a members’ club experience floating 800 feet in the sky. Spaces have been designed for socializing, entertaining, exercising, and relaxing, all wrapped in panoramic views from sunrise to sunset.
Placed on the tower’s uppermost floor, a fitness center, weight room, and yoga / pilates studio has been designed for residents to have their workouts unfold in the sky. Situated below the gym, an impressive indoor saltwater lap pool provides views of the water and Manhattan’s glistening cityscape. The pool room draws inspiration from Italian architectural styles, featuring a double-height ceiling, a statement wall of Ambrato marble, and a prominent glass ribbed column.
Dedicated wellness spaces include a sauna, steam room, and zen-inspired treatment rooms. Additional ‘quiet spaces’ have been designed for pure rejuvenation—not only of the body, but the mind and soul. Featuring soft, high-backed chairs that look straight out to the Manhattan skyline, the residence’s view makes for a calming sunrise and sunset experience.
Finally, a private screening room with plush chairs and a moody aesthetic provides the perfect setting for an intimate film screening. Making strategic use of space, a reservable board room seamlessly transforms after dark into a private dining room for family dinners and celebratory events.
Residences: The Greenwich features 272 residences, ranging from studios to three-bedrooms and an exclusive suite of Penthouses. Seamless, curved, and full-height, floor-to-ceiling curtain walls provide a wide range of timeless New York City views, while creating a meaningful indoor-outdoor connection.
For the residences, MAWD worked to select the highest quality natural materials and finishes for elevated, hospitality-inspired living. The three custom-designed palettes, Aqua, Terra, and Stratus, reflect the natural elements surrounding the building with their subtle, complementary hues paying homage to the cool water of the Hudson River, the skyline’s rich architecture, and the sky.
Custom kitchens and bathrooms feature bespoke details and fittings selected for each palette, along with expanses of Covelano marble and polished nickel. All the residential kitchens have been outfitted by Molteni&C, which complements the project’s exclusive use of Italian furniture design. The concealed kitchens feature a marble backdrop, which draws on hospitality-inspired design, while remaining fully functional for the home chef. Lastly, 6-inch-wide White Oak plank flooring sets a tone of timeless, yet natural elegance, while pre-wiring for motorized window treatments allows residents to set the interior ambiance at the touch of a button.
