Salt Lake City Fire Station 03

Located in the residential suburb of Sugarhouse, the Salt Lake City Fire Station No. 03 is designed to provide a modern, yet complementary counterpoint to the existing neighborhood and adjacent historic golf course clubhouse.

The station puts firefighter wellness at the forefront, incorporating a number of amenities like exterior social terraces, garden areas, an exercise room, and a sauna that helps in toxin removal from pathogen exposure. Views and exterior spaces are carefully framed to utilize the adjacent Forest Dale Golf Course as a therapeutic opportunity for the firefighters. The station also serves as a community hub, with a 50-person multi-purpose room located on the 2nd floor providing much needed space for gatherings and events for the citizens.

Station 03 is projected to be the second of only two Net Zero Energy fire stations in the country. Achieving Net Zero Energy as a 24/7/365 operational facility requires a holistic design approach which includes thorough investigation of envelope components, selection of building systems, and a diligent, pro-active use of energy modeling to assess design decisions. The station employs many innovative solutions, including; a geothermal HVAC system, radiant concrete slabs, a high-performance super insulated building envelope, and triple-paned glazing with ceramic frit.
Exterior cladding includes a pre-patinated zinc panel and a high-performance concrete skin. Where greater quantities of glass were desired on the west face, the zinc cladding was perforated to reduce solar heat gain but still provide views, energy and connection to the community. The concrete panel skin takes cues from shingle style bungalows nearby.

Salt Lake City Fire Station 03 was awarded LEED Platinum certification, setting a benchmark for sustainable fire station design across the state of Utah and nationwide.
